GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The Bacon Wave microwave bacon tray claims it can give you the frying pan taste without the frying pan.
The plastic tray holds up to 14 pieces of bacon. It's supposed to cook bacon to perfection with less fat, grease, cholesterol and calories.
Chef Dan Weiskopf helped me put it to the test. We used regular, thick cut, and turkey bacon. Cook times depend on your microwave wattage and how many slices you're using, which ended up being seven minutes for us.
The grease does splatter a bit in your microwave. The bacon tasted pretty darn good. It was crispy and juicy. When we compared it to bacon fried in a pan on the stovetop, well, it couldn't compare, but the Bacon Wave was a very good alternative.
The best part is the grease collects at the bottom of the tray and easily drains off. We couldn't believe how much fat we were able to drain off, so that was very nice.
We did find you have to be careful not to over-cook the bacon, because it will dry out. Instead of making it crispier, it just made it dry, so stick to the times they suggest and you may have to play around to your tastes.
We were impressed with the Bacon Wave. It's a nice alternative and easier clean-up for cooking bacon. We bought it online for around $16.
