(WZZM) - On Saturday, the state of Michigan turns 176 years old, and a group called "The Awesome Mitten," is kicking off the year right...with lots of food.

The Awesome Mitten is hosting a bake-off competition. Bakeries around the state have entered pictures of their best, Michigan-themed desserts. Some common themes this year, lots of Michigan fruit, and of course, the state's famous shape. Voting ends Friday night on the Awesome Mitten's website and Facebook page. The winner takes home $1,000.

People are also invited to come out to celebrate in person on Saturday, when the winner will be announced. Since this is a state-wide competition, several meeting sites have been set up in the major cities. The one in Grand Rapids will be at the Mitten Brewing Company.

"We're excited to be a part of Michigan's birthday," said Mitten Brewing Company Co-owner Chris Andrus. "I think it's a great combination of reasons to come out to the brewery; there's a charity, it's Michigan's birthday, and it's a chance to meet a lot of new people."

Each location will be doing a little charity work during the party. the Mitten Brewing Company will be asking for donations of hats, mittens, and other winter clothing.

The party is at 1-3 p.m. and is free to attend.
