KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Kalamazoo police say a 34-year-old man wasn't armed when an officer fatally shot him in a hotel lobby.

Chief Jeff Hadley says Jacob Grassley failed to obey orders by officers who caught him Thursday night at the Best Western Hospitality Inn. He was being pursued as part of a domestic assault investigation.

Hadley says his department is conducting an internal investigation of the shooting. He says a woman had told police that she believed Grassley had taken three weapons from her Kalamazoo home.

Grassley wasn't facing any charges in the Kalamazoo area. But the police chief says there were two warrants for his arrest in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Below is a news release from Chief Jeff Hadley of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety:

On January 24, 2013 at approximately 1400hrs, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers investigated a domestic assault case involving a 34 year old Kalamazoo man. During the course of this investigation, officers had reason to believe the 34 year old subject was armed; however he had left the residence prior to the officer's arrival.

Through follow up investigation, the 34 year old subject was located and a traffic stop was initiated by Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers at approximately 2200 hrs. The subject failed to yield to the Officers and drove to the Best Western Hotel, 3640 E. Cork St., Kalamazoo Michigan. The subject exited his vehicle and entered the lobby area of the hotel where he was confronted by Public Safety Officers.

During the course of the confrontation a Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer shot the subject. The subject was transported to Bronson Hospital Emergency Center where he later died. Per policy, the Office of Professional Standards, along with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety are conducting separate investigations of this incident. No further information will be released at this time. All further inquiries should be directed to the Chief's Office.
