GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Supporting Grand Rapids' youth and becoming a more sustainable city - those were two of the topics Mayor George Heartwell covered during Saturday's State of the City Address.

During the event, Mercantile Bank donated $100,000 to Upward Bound, which helps prepare teenagers for college.  The Mayor also announced $30,000 in federal support for studying a large-scale solar installation at the former Butterworth Landfill.

Heartwell also highlighted all the national lists Grand Rapids  recently made, including being one of the best places to relocate, best cities to retire and raise a family, and one of the top ten comeback cities in America.

"A lesser city than ours would sit on its laurels, content with attention of the nation," said Mayor Heartwell. "But this is a city driven by what Dr. Martin Luther King called, 'fierce urgency of now.'"

Mayor Heartwell wrapped up his speech by asking everyone to pledge to do more for the city. This was Mayor Heartwell's tenth State of the City Address. Click here to read the address in its entirety.
