GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Grand Rapids will soon welcome a new event, inspired by the Bill Murray comedy, "Groundhog Day".
The inaugural Groundhog Day Marathon will take place February 2 on the Kent Trails. What makes this race different is that participants will run the same four miles over and over, much like the repetition in "Groundhog Day".
The race director of the Grand Rapids Marathon is organizing the event. He says he was inspired to create the race after a road trip to Punxsutawney last year.
"We took a road trip with four guys, we drove down to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and one of the things that was lacking there; there wasn't even a 5K race or anything. So by the time we got back, we figured out that there needed to be a Groundhog Day Marathon here in Grand Rapids," says race director Don Kern.
Kern says more than 500 runners are signed up to take part in the Groundhog Day Marathon, including many from out of state.
The trophies will be wooden groundhogs carved by a local artist, using a chainsaw.
