GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Nationally gun debates are heating up. On top of assault riffles, gun control activists often site a gun show loophole. We caught up with one at the DeltaPlex.

Organizers say there is no loophole at gun auctions. They say anyone buying a gun has to go through one of three checks.

1.) Get a concealed weapons permit-- which often includes classes, shooting range time, and a check by the FBI.

2.) Get a purchase permit- which you can get at your local sheriff's department. It allows you thirty days in the state of Michigan to buy a weapon after you've gone through a background check.

3.) Get a background check on site. Your credentials will be sent to the FBI.

Randy Brown, the auction organizer says the alleged loophole comes down to once people actually own the gun. He says in Michigan people can sell to a neighbor or a friend without requiring a buyer to go through a check themselves. He says if the government changed that rule, it would become a slippery slope about private property rights.
