Sgt. Mark Schoonhoven died Jan. 20 after being injured in Kabul

FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP/WZZM) -- Fort Carson is holding a memorial service for a Michigan soldier who died from injuries he suffered in Afghanistan.

The service being held Wednesday will honor 38-year-old Sgt. Mark H. Schoonhoven of Plainwell, Mich.

Schoonhoven died Jan. 20 at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was injured by an improvised bomb on Dec. 15 in Kabul.

Schoonhoven was assigned to the 43rd Sustainment Brigade, part of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.

The funeral for Schoonhoven will be in Otsego, Michigan on February 7th.  Friends are organizing a processional route in honor of Schoolhoven - click here for the Facebook event link.
