GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Michigan leaders could be expanding the state's online registry for sex offenders.
More than 11 million people have visited Michigan's sex offender website. Soon the online registry may also feature more sex offenders. This week, the Senate passed a bill which would require online registration for less violent sex crimes, including possessing child pornography, unlawful imprisonment of a minor, video-taping a minor, and aggravated indecent exposure to a minor.
"I know some instances where parents have shown pictures to their children," says Trooper Richard Bell with the Michigan State Police..
Currently, the registry lists 41,000 sex offenders who are convicted of crimes including sexual assault or prostitution. State Police say if the bill is approved, that number could grow. Troopers say the registry helps solve some crimes and prevent future ones.
State police say there are currently at least 27 sex crimes that require registration.
