GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - WZZM 13 is taking a stand to help stop the recent surge in gun violence in Grand Rapids.
Three mothers on a mission joined Lee Van Ameyde for a special edition of WZZM 13 News at 5:30 on Wednesday to remember their sons and change a culture of crime and violence that claimed their lives.
Valerie Figures, who lost two sons to gun violence says, "it's very devastating. I wouldn't wish any mother would sit here and have to go through what I'm going through."
Fran Molson's son was killed in 2008. She says, "I just want these kids to realize that they're not just hurting their family, but they're hurting other families also."
The mothers say in at least three of the four murders their children were either in the wrong place at the wrong time, or a victim of mistaken identity. They're hopeful for peace on the streets-- but they say the courts and schools need to step up.
