OVID TWP. (LANSING STATE JOURNAL) - A 13-year-old Ovid Township girl died after her 14-year-old brother told police he accidentally fired a shotgun in their home.

Paige McGinnis died after she was shot once in the head Saturday afternoon, said Clinton County Sheriff Wayne Kangas.

Emergency responders were called at 4:05 p.m. to the family's home, located in the 9200 block of Woodworth Road in Ovid Township, in response to the shooting.

Paige's brother told sheriff's officials he was handling the shotgun when it unexpectedly went off in the home. He said he thought it was unloaded, Kangas said.

The siblings were home alone at the time of the shooting.

The boy first called his mother, then 911, Kangas said.

Ovid-Elsie Area Schools Superintendant Ryan Cunningham said grief counselors are on hand at E.E. Knight Elementary School, where Paige was a sixth-grader, and at the middle school, where her brother is enrolled.

"Ovid-Elsie is so small and when something like this happens, it affects a lot of people," said Cunningham, who said he was familiar with the family and knew both of the students.

"She was just a delightful kid, she one of our students of the month a couple different times," he said. "I just think of her as a wonderful student, one of those great kids you look forward to having in the class."

He said both siblings are good kids.

"They are the kind of kids who were not troublemakers," he said. "... We're grieving with the family as a community and a district and we hope and pray for the best."

An autopsy will most likely be conducted on Tuesday at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Kangas said.

The investigation is ongoing.
