GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A plan to restore the whitewater rapids in the Grand River has the support of Michigan's Department of Natural Resources director.

The group, Grand Rapids Whitewater wants to tear down five dams to restore the rapids. There is concern about how that would affect certain fish habitats. But DNR director, Keith Creagh says it would likely improve the fishery.

"There's one challenge about putting the rapids back into Grand Rapids, and that's making sure that sea lampreys don't continue up the Grand River. So they'll go through a series of boulders and structures, and they'll still have a lamprey control structure throughout the project. But it should increase the fisheries," said Creagh.

Grand Rapids Whitewater says the project will generate millions of dollars for the local economy each year.
