GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- As we get closer to Valentine's Day, sweet treats are a natural option. As part of our 'Made in Michigan' series, Sweetland Candies tells us how they've made West Michigan a little sweeter for nearly 100 years.
Vice President, John Naum's chocolates are sure to lure you in tradition keeps families coming back. Naum says, "It's really nice. A lot of people's kids are now our customers."
And it may be the more than 100 varieties of white, dark, milk, and sugar free chocolates that keep people coming back.
"We have chocolate covered nuts, creams, caramels, and everything that goes great with chocolate."
Sweetland Candies' best kept secret to freshness is behind their storefront.
"We literally make most of our products right here like we have over the past 94 years," says Naum.
All of the chocolates are handmade on site and placed through a chocolate dipper, then decorated by hand and packaged. But the true soul of this company is as much about the chocolate as it is about family.
"My dad has been able to pass on a lot of things to me, but more so my son which he's a natural at candy skills. It's neat to see their interaction," says Naum.
After four generations, this family plans to keep passing the baton.
