Helen Lettinga turned 110 February 6, 2013.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - According to the Gerontology Research Group, there are fewer than 70 people in the world who are super centenarians, meaning they are 110 years old and older. One of them resides in Grand Rapids.
Helen Lettinga turned 110 years old Wednesday. Several of her family and friends attended a birthday party held in her honor.
Helen was born February 6, 1903. Teddy Roosevelt was president at the time of her birth and just 10 months earlier, the Wright brothers invented aviation.
Her birth was nine years before the Titanic sank, and five years before the Chicago Cubs won their last World Series.
Helen shared her key to longevity, "It's not how old you are, it's how old you feel and how you feel about other things. When I was 50, I didn't think about things I do now, and that's old age. You just take it as it comes."
Lettinga is a lifelong Michigan resident. She celebrated her birthday with her two daughters, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grand children, and five great-great grand children.
