LANSING, Mich. (AP & WZZM) -- Michigan civil rights officials want the federal government to ban K-12 school districts from using American Indian mascots and imagery.

A complaint filed Friday says the mascots amount to discrimination, which can harm Native American students by lowering their self-esteem and impacting their ability to learn and achieve.

About three dozen public school districts in the state use the mascots, including Belding Area Schools, Morley Stanwood Community Schools, Saugatuck Public Schools, and the White Cloud School District.
