Muskegon Heights, Mich. (WZZM) - A Muskegon Heights man is in critical condition after being burned in a house fire.

The fire began around 6:30AM Sunday morning in the 3300 block of Jefferson Street.

One man was home at the time, he was renting the house.

"One of the occupants who lived at the home already escaped," said Muskegon Heights Fire Chief Christopher Dean. "Although he had sustained some injuries."

The man had second and third degree burns and also suffered from smoke inhalation. He is in the hospital.

"Fire crews were able to enter the home quickly, knock down the fire and search for any other persons that may have been in the home," said Dean. No one else was inside.

The house was boarded up Sunday morning to keep people from disturbing the scene. The investigation into the cause will now begin.

"We are looking into the cause of the fire," said Dean. "It's unknown at this time for sure how the fire started, but it started on the main floor of the home."

The chief says there were smoke detectors in the house, but he's not sure if they were working.

"We're hoping they're what allowed the occupant to escape the home," said Dean.
