HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - The recent blast of winter weather has caused a surge in claims for some local insurance companies. Agents with Farm Bureau Insurance in Holland say claims are up about five times what they normally are and that some people don't even know how well they're covered.
When slippery road conditions have drivers spinning, Nolan Kamer often wakes up with a financial headache.
"The last couple winters have been pretty good for the insurance business, but this year I think we're making up for it," says Kamer, an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance.
Kamer says accidents caused by the recent winter blast have insurance claims soaring.
"We file at least five claims a day, on snowy roads and cars that slide off," says Kamer.
The financial damage ranges from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Kamer says often times drivers don't know what kind of insurance policy they have. The three types of collision insurance are broadform, regular, and limited.
"They (drivers) think they have broad collision, when they really have regular, or they might not have collision at all, and they get into an accident and think they're covered, but they're really not, so it's a common mistake people make," says Kamer.
Kamer says it's important to know what kind of insurance you have before an accident, rather than after. However, he says the best idea is to slow down and avoid an accident altogether if you can.
