HOLLAND, MICH. (WZZM) -- The U.S. Attorney for Western Michigan says a federal grand jury has indicted 31 alleged members of the Holland Latin Kings gang for charges including attempted murder, conspiracy, arson, racketeering, drug trafficking and firearms possession.

"We have been dealing with this group for 25 years, so this is a huge event for us, basically trying to eradicate them from our community," says Matt Messer, Holland Police Chief.

According to a news release Tuesday from U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles, the members of the Holland gang engaged in acts of violence and drug trafficking "in order to promote the gang and enrich its members while insulating themselves from law enforcement."

Holland Department of Public Safety Captain Jack Dykstra says the investigation began in 2010. He says 29 of the 31 people indicted are in custody, and authorities are looking for the final two. The gang is believed to be active in several states, including Florida, Illinois, and Michigan.

"There was an individual arrested in Phoenix, Arizona. He was actually pulled off an airplane after he had already boarded," says Captain Dykstra.

Dykstra says some of the people indicted were arrested in June 2012 as part of a search warrant.

"Some of them were charged and then re-charged on a bigger conspiracy type case," says Chief Messer.

Some of the alleged gang members already appeared in Federal Court, others are expected to be in court on Wednesday.
