Take Five Shrimp Caribbean Fried Rice 2/15/2013

Shrimp ( peeled and devained)
Mixed Vegetables
Green Onions
Cooked White Rice
Coconut Cream
Sweet and Sour Sauce
Soy Sauce
Dry Basil
Spaghetti Sauce
Onion Powder
vegetable Oil
Habanero Paste
Chicken Boullion
In House Seasoning

1. take a medium size skillet (preferably non-stick)

2. put the skillet on medium heat and let it heat up for about a minute

3.squirt 1 Teaspoon of Vegetable Oil into the skillet

4. let the oil heat up for about 30 seconds

5. Now you're going to add just about 8-10 peeled and devained uncooked shrimps to the skillet

6. add a pinch of green onions and parsley

7. 1 Tablespoon of Sweet and Sour sauce

8. 1 Tablespoon of Teriyaki

9. 1/2 a teaspoon of Soy Sauce

10. 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Cream

11. A pinch of Dry Basil

12. A pinch of Onion Powder

13. 2 Pinches of Chicken Boullion

14.Toss around the shrimp in the mixture till you see it begin to change into a light orange

15. Next you will throw in the Mixed Vegetables and Spinach

16. Then you are going to Take 1/2 a cup of spaghetti sauce and 1/2 a cup of water and mix it together

17. you will then throw the sauce in the shrimp mixture and let it simmer for about 2 mins ( that way the vegetables will cook)

18. once it has simmered down and the vegetables are cooked you will throw in your cooked white rice.

19. Last but not least make sure the rice is completely mixed in.

20. Once you have mixed the rice with the vegetables your fried rice will begin to carmalize and pick up this wonderful color and that when you know that it's ready to be served.

GRAND RAPIDS - The Grand Rapids Public Library will examine African American heritage at the eighth annual, Taste of Soul Sunday on February 17, 2013 from 1-4:30 pm at the Main Library - 111 Library St NE.

Taste of Soul Sunday is an annual event that features food sampling from local restaurants, lectures by local authors, historians, and artists, music and children's activities. Musical performances will include Karisa Wilson, Serita's Black Rose, and Greg Peacock.

History and author presentations include: Buster Mathis Jr. on Bullying; Developing a Family Plan, Just a Country Girl; and Exploring African American Literature.

Activities for children and teens will feature storyteller Miz Rosie as Coretta Scott King; a songwriting workshop with Karisa Wilson and a craft activity.

Free food samplings will be provided by local restaurants Chez Olga, Southern Fish Fry and Duthler's Family Foods. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.grpl.org/tasteofsoul.

The Grand Rapids Public Library will also host authors Todd Robinson, Kris Mathis and Shannon Harris and poet Azizi Jasper. Robinson will discuss his new book "A City within a City: The Black Freedom Struggle in Grand Rapids, Michigan" on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00 pm at the Main Library. His book is a case study of the civil rights era as it happened in smaller cities.

Mathis and Harris will share "From Success to Significance: The 8 Keys to Achieving any Goal or Dream by Kris Mathis with Shannon L. Harris." The book outlines a step-by-step program to achieving any goal or dream. The program and book signing will be held at the Main Library on Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30 pm.

Poet Azizi Jasper with host a poetry slam for the whole family on Saturday, February 9 at 3:00 pm at the Madison Square Branch - 1201 Madison SE. Azizi is the winner of several poetry slams and competitions throughout the state.
