Muskegon County Domestic Violence Task Force flash mob (February 14, 2013)

MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP. Mich. (WZZM) - A flash mob broke out Thursday, intended to stop violence against women. The V-Day flash mob at the Muskegon Community College was organized by Jenny McNeil with the Muskegon County Domestic Violence Task Force.

Noon is a busy time at the college's Collegiate Hall and McNeil says it was a good location to "make a statement." She says that statement is to let young adults know, "there are different opportunities and ways to stand up and see that violence against women is no longer acceptable."

The Muskegon dancers joined activists around the world to raise awareness of domestic violence. One Billion Rising is a global activist movement. It claims one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.

The group of 30 women and one man connected using social media. Then arrived at the college shortly before noon. Once their music started they joined in choreographed dance routine to the song 'Break the Chain.'

Some students reached for their phones to record the event. Others just stopped what they were doing and watched until the dance routine finished. The event ended with applause and hugs.
