IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- A portion of I-96 in Ionia County has re-opened after a fatal accident Saturday morning. The accident happened shortly after midnight near the Kent exit in Portland in the eastbound lanes of I-96.
A 57 year-old Portland man was traveling eastbound on I-96, when his truck left the roadway and struck a guardrail. The truck came to rest on its roof in the eastbound lanes. A Ford Escape driven by a 55 year-old Grand Rapids man then hit the truck.
The driver of the Escape was transported to Sparrow Hospital and is in stable condition. A 56 year old female, who was a passenger in the Escape, is in critical condition.
The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Names of the victims are not being released until all notifications have been made.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
