BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Law enforcement officials in Big Rapids and in Van Buren County Missouri continue to investigate the disappearance of a Michigan man.
Fred Byrne, 49, is from Big Rapids, but was last seen leaving his mother's home in Holland Township on Tuesday Feb. 12. Byrne had gone to Holland to take his son back to Hope College and had stopped to visit his mother in Holland Township. He last mentioned that he was going to stop at RiverTown Crossings Mall in Grandville to pick up a Valentine's gift for his wife on the way back to Big Rapids.
Byrne's car was found Thursday, Feb. 14, 600 miles away, off a remote dirt road near the Mark Twain National Forest in Carter County, Missouri. His wallet and keys were in the car, but there was no sign of Byrne.
Byrne's car was returned to Michigan over the weekend and the Michigan State Police Grand Rapids Crime Lab processed the car over the weekend. Investigators are examining any evidence that they may have found.
Meanwhile in Missouri, crews called off the search Sunday night for Byrne or any other suspicious activity near where the car was found due to darkness. Big Rapids investigators will be coordinating future search efforts with Missouri later today.
