CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (Battle Creek Enquirer) --Three people died in a one-vehicle accident Monday afternoon on eastbound I-94 near Verona Road.
Calhoun County sheriff deputies said shortly before 4 p.m., a sport-utility vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
The Ford Explorer careened onto G Drive North, which parallels the freeway. The impact was so great that the engine was ripped from the vehicle.
Two men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene, and a man and a woman were injured and taken to an area hospital. The surviving victims' injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
A helicopter ambulance was called to the scene as rescue workers attempted to save the life of one of the victims, but the efforts were not successful.
Eastbound traffic was stopped and was backed up for several miles before the freeway was reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m.
