GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The fast flurry of snow Friday morning got us to wondering: Which stretch of Grand Rapids area highway is the worst when the snow falls?
The comments on Facebook numbered over 130. Many shared our staff's opinions that some of the top three are: M-6, U.S. 131 near Rockford, and 1-96 in Marne. Of course, any highway can be tricky when it's snowing hard, but why do these make the list?
One Facebook poster, Niki Stauffer, said M 6 "is always a nightmare during a snowstorm."
Danielle Hussey Starke, speaking about U.S. 131 near Post Road, said "White-outs happen all the time there. Definite white knuckle driving."
While no statistics were immediately available, Michigan State Police sergeant Scott Wilber of the Rockford post did say he and his colleagues seem to respond, most of the time, to crashes on highways in the city of Grand Rapids.
"It's just because of the large volume of traffic, then you mix some snow in there and that's where the majority of the troopers spend their time," Wilber said.
