ROCKFORD, Mich. (WZZM) - On February 23, 1945 a famous photograph was taken of the United States Marines raising the U.S. flag on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. 68 years later there are nearly 200,000 Marines stationed around the world and staying connected to home is important.

For some second grade students in Rockford the connection became a little more personal than the typical pen pal letter.

In the video posted above, WZZM 13 photojournalist John Linsley explains with a little help from assistants.

The military video was taken for the kids by Sergeant Linsley, with Marine Corp approval. He promises to visit the students when he returns from deployment.
