GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Monday was perfect day to grow potholes: Sunny, warm temperatures filled city streets with melted water. That water is sitting inside potholes, where it will freeze overnight, then expand and those potholes will be bigger Tuesday.

The problem is the same in every Michigan city, and the solution, the governor says, is raising "user fees" on motorists. That means higher gas taxes and vehicle registration costs. It would cost the average motorist $120 per year, and raise $1.2 billion a year for the next ten years.

Gov. Snyder and others supporting the road work, a coalition called Just Fix The Roads says waiting will only make the problem worse, and more costly.

But there are serious political potholes. The republican leader of the state senate doesn't like the gas tax plan. Indeed, it's hard to find any lawmaker who likes to raise taxes. So, the debate will continue, while the potholes get bigger.
