Fruitport - 3500 block of Reginald
MUSKEGON COUNTY (WZZM) -- Investigators are working to determine what started a fire that damaged two lakeshore homes overnight.
The fire started around 2 a.m. in the 3500 block of Reginald Drive in Fruitport Township. When crews arrived they found two homes on fire. Families inside had to run for safety. We are told they did escape.
Police are saying the fire started when a transformer blew out. However, they have not said what led them to that conclusion.
Tuesday morning, a Consumers Energy spokesperson expressed doubts. According to Roger Morgenstern, the company has not received a report of a transformer needing to be repaired or replaced.
Morgenstern said Consumers Energy will have crews out on the fire scene after daybreak to investigate whether or not a blown transformer did indeed cause this fire.
