Gerald Singer is accused of burning his properties to collect insurance money.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) -- Federal prosecutors are building their case against a Norton Shores landlord, accused of burning his properties to collect insurance money.

The trial against 73-year-old Gerald Singer is in its second week in federal court. Prosecutors hope to prove Singer lied on his taxes, committed fraud, and burned properties he owned to collect $700,000 in insurance settlements.

A burned out apartment building owned by Singer was razed last week by the city of Muskegon Heights. A $22,000 state grant was used to clear the lot on 7th Street.

The case against Singer resumes next week.
