VAN BUREN, COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - A Van Buren County Sheriff's Deputy is being credited with saving the life of a fellow police officer while on a flight in early March.

Deputy Brian Mathews was returning from training in Arizona with several other Michigan police officers on March 3rd when a fellow office had a sudden medical issue.  The flight crew asked if there was a doctor onboard and after getting no response, Mathews, who had trained as an EMT, came forward and gave medical assistance.

Mathews was able to assess the issue and recommend that the plane land immediately in Des Moines, Iowa.  Because of Mathews intervention, the officer received treatment within 80 minutes of suffering the condition, well within the three hour window needed for such a treatment.

Deputy Mathews was given a Life Saving Award on March 14th.
