SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WZZM)- An explosion at a Lakeshore marina has left one person injured and several expensive boats ruined.
It happened around 10 this morning at North Shore Marina. Firefighters say it started with an explosion which appears to have happened while one man was working on his boat.
That man, a 55-year-old from Grand Rapids, went to the hospital with some serious burns, but is expected to be OK.
Several of these boats, not so OK.
Three boats went up in flames, and several more have smoke damage. It took a while, but firefighters managed to extinguish the flames. "This is a unique fire," said Grand Haven Public Safety Chief Jeff Hawke. "It's in a large structure filled with large boats; they're packed in there. Accessing the fire, because it was back in the corner, was very difficult. Visibility was zero. It took a lot of work and coordinated effort from all the firefighters here."
Another concern, the water used to put out the fire also washed oil into the water. The Coast Guard came in to contain it: "This one here is actually a pretty small spill," said Commander of the Grand Haven USCG Sean Brady. He estimates only a half gallon made it into the water, and it's already been cleaned up.
