GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Michigan should be proud of its efforts to improve the mental health of its citizens. That opinion from former Congressman, Patrick Kennedy, the son of the late Senator Ted Kennedy.

Kennedy was a U.S. Representative for Rhode Island from 1995-2011. He has battled depression and bipolar disorder and is an advocate for mental health care. He spoke Monday in Grand Rapids.

"In cancer, we have centers of excellence, but we don't have that in mental health-- except here in Michigan! So Michigan has already created a huge bow wave in leading the rest of the nation on setting standards," said Kennedy.

Kennedy's visit was hosted by Hope Network, the Grand Rapids-based group that helps people with disabilities.
