UPDATE: 10:30 p.m. -- GRPS leaders say they were notified late Monday night that members of the GREA voted to accept a tentative contract.

"This is certainly welcomed news," John Helmholdt
director of communications wrote in an email to WZZM 13.

The Grand Rapids Board of Education will hold a special meeting Tuesday evening to ratify the deal. That meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Rev. Lyman S. Parks Administration Building.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- If teachers agree to a deal from Grand Rapids Public Schools, the board must ratify it Tuesday or start the process over. Monday night, the teachers' votes were still being counted.

Earlier this month teachers made emotional pleas to board members about the need for a better contract. The union has been negotiating with the district since last summer.

Monday teachers voted on a tentative deal. It includes an increase in salary but year to year experience raises remain frozen. The district would not make guarantees on class sizes for the teachers, but it will offer three insurance plans for staff to choose from.

Voting ended around 6 p.m. Monday. Union president Paul Helder expects the results of the vote will be finalized late this evening.
