GR school board ratifies new teacher pact

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Teachers in Grand Rapids Public Schools now have a contract for the first time in eight months.

The school board voted Tuesday to ratify the collective bargaining agreement reached with the Grand Rapids Education Association.  Teachers overwhelmingly approved the deal in their voting Monday.

The contract takes effect on April 1, and runs through June 30, 2015.  Here are other details of the deal, according to a joint statement from the district and teachers union:

  • New salary schedule effective April 1, 2013 with increases ranging from 2% to 4.31%. 
  • Enrollment incentive to be paid on schedule if audited 2014 Fall enrollment loss less than 700 students as compared to audited Fall 2013 enrollment. Incentives range from 0.25% to 2.0% depending on enrollment loss. 
  • Elimination of the 11% premium share on all dental, vision, life, and long-term disability upon ratification of the contract. Currently GREA members are paying 11% of these costs. 
  • Three health insurance plan options effective July 1, 2013. 
  • District continued implementation of hard cap for medical insurance 
  • No steps are provided in 2012-13 or 2013-14. An opportunity to re-negotiate salary inclusive of steps and insurance premium share upon notification of either party by April 1, 2014. 
  • GRPS will continue dues deduction and agency shop through June 30, 2015. Opportunity to amend contract if penalty/revenue is conditioned upon compliance with PA 349. 
  • Five elementary schools currently on an alternative year calendar will return to the traditional calendar for 2013-2014.
