Rock the Rapids, Grand Rapids. (August 2012)
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Rock the Rapids music festival is moving back to Fifth Third Ballpark this year after two years in downtown Grand Rapids. The three-day concert event will be held August 20-22.
Festival founder Dennis Baxter says the board of directors and promoters wanted to reexamine the downtown business model from both an economic standpoint and also a location standpoint.
"We recognize that our present location downtown may not be available to us on a long-term basis, and so we needed to take a step back and research new opportunities to continue as a growing event downtown," Baxter said in a media release Friday.
The first two Rock the Rapids events were held at Fifth Third Ballpark in 2009 and 2010. The week-long music festival has grown each year, with the 2012 festival drawing nearly 40,000 fans downtown.
Artists for this year's event have not yet been released, but organizers hope to name the acts soon.
