COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the Palisades nuclear plant in southwestern Michigan operated safely in 2012.
NRC staff members will discuss their assessment of the plant's performance during a public meeting Tuesday in South Haven. Also attending will be representatives of New Orleans-based Entergy Corp., which owns the plant in Van Buren County's Covert Township.
NRC regional administrator Charles Casto says the agency is conducting inspections to make sure Palisades' improvements continue. Two inspectors are assigned to the plant and others have come from different offices.
The agency downgraded the plant's status last year because of several safety violations in 2011. Officials say the problems have been cleared up.
In a letter to plant managers, the NRC says it also has seen improvements in staff performance, although more are needed.
