GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Dave Agema, a former republican state representative from Grandville, is defending his anti-gay posting on Facebook. Now several members of his own party are calling for his resignation.
Agema, who is now a Michigan representative for the Republican National Committee, posted an article titled "Everyone Should Know These Statistics on Homosexuals."
"So, basically, I copied and pasted an article written by Dr. Frank Joseph, who's a doctor, an obstetrician."
The article says homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles and have historically accounted for the bulk of sexually transmitted diseases. Agema has since removed the posting, saying the statistics were outdated. But he also says there are newer, similar articles that he should have posted instead.
"So, there's a lot of stuff out there. I'm not surprised by any of it. What I am surprised at, is when you bring up numbers and statistics, that suddenly you're labeled as a hate monger," Agema told WZZM 13.
Agema is being criticized by members of his own party. Specifically, 20 republicans who issued a statement calling for his resignation. Republican Dennis Lennox tweeted, "This isn't about marriage, it's about a disgraceful, ignorant bigot named Dave Agema and his lunacy."
"That doesn't surprise me, but again, the party itself stands on conservative principles. So, if you don't stand on those conservative principals, I think our core base will be upset," Agema said.
