One of the main reasons people stop in Grand Rapids is to try Founders' Kentucky Breakfast Stout.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Beer for breakfast may not be everyone's favorite, but some fans of Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout swear by it.
"We drove all the way here from Peoria to buy this beer," says KBS drinker Andy Stowe. "It's really hard to get."
KBS is a potent, chocolate and coffee flavored imperial stout aged 12 months in bourbon barrels. Founders makes one batch every year. Saturday morning, they tapped the first kegs of 2013 at their brewery in Grand Rapids.
"The demand for KBS continues to grow," confirms Founders communication manager Sara Aldrich. "The beer ages for a year in the caves beneath Grand Rapids in oak bourbon barrels. It just comes out once a year."
Customers line up to buy the limited supply of bottled KBS. They also crowd the Founders tap room to drink the dark, fragrant brew right out of the barrel.
"This beer is awesome," says Bobby Massey, who drove in from Cleveland for a drink. "Once you taste it, you will never look at beer the same way again."
Right now you can only buy Founders KBS at their tap room in Grand Rapids. However, starting Monday, the company says it will be available in the 23 states where its beer is distributed, while supplies last.
