NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - Newaygo County investigators will be looking into what drove a man to kill his wife and adult son, and then kill himself, Wednesday afternoon in Newaygo County.

Undersheriff Brian Boyd tells WZZM 13 News the body of Charles Mark Hoover was found by a police robot at the top of a staircase in the family's home. Police are now working with family to piece together a motive.  Boyd says Hoover killed his wife Marcia, 62, and their son, who was also named Charles, age 37.

Around 2:00pm, police were called to a home in the area of 17 Mile Road, east of M-37 for reports of shots fired.  Authorities found two people dead of gunshot wounds.

A manhunt began for Hoover and authorities were able to confirm Hoover's death at about 11:00pm.

A neighbor described Hoover as a strange, religious man. "He's a little different than most people I know. Very, very religious. Anytime I was over there he preached to me."

WZZM 13's Jon Mills spoke with neighbors Thursday morning.  One described Hoover's home as a "compound", with watch towers.

We'll have more updates as more details become available.
