Muskegon, Mich. (WZZM) - Investigators say a Muskegon woman wanted her husband dead so she could collect on his insurance policy.
"She is charged with solicitation to commit murder," says Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson.
Julia Merfeld, 21, was in court Thursday. She is accused of trying to hire a hit man to murder her 27 year old husband.
"I think it's kind of crazy," said Oradawn Villarreal, one of the defendant's neighbors on W. Forest Avenue. "She's only 21 and got 2 little kids."
Police say they found out Merfeld was looking for someone to kill her husband.
They organized a sting and put her in touch with a "hit man" who was really an undercover officer.
"I'm convinced, had the tip not come into our office and this had gone forward, we would be investigating a homicide," says Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler.
After they say she tried to hire the police decoy to kill her husband, Merfeld was arrested.
"Following the conversation the arrest was made," explains Sheriff Roesler.
Investigators do not say how much insurance money they believe Julia Merfeld was hoping to collect after the death of her husband.
"Who would just ruin their life for that?" wonders Villarreal. "You could walk out of a marriage if you are not happy."
The judge set bail for Merfeld at $500.000.
