IONIA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Scary moments Thursday afternoon for an Ionia High School student when a bridge he was driving over collapsed due to flooding.

Devin Gorby was driving home from school on Lincoln Avenue in Ionia when he came upon the small bridge over Bellamy Creek. What happened next, he certainly didn't expect.

As Gorby approached the bridge, he saw a part of the road had buckled, but it was too late to stop. He says he felt like his car went over a cliff. It immediately got stuck and he could not back out. Within 10 minutes, his car was at a 90 degree angle as the bridge was completely washed out by the strong current.

"I caught it, I was already over and I got out of the car. I was really thankful that someone else pulled up behind me and I could use their phone to dial the police and get some help, but by the time they got there, the car was too late to save," said Gorby. "I'm really lucky-- I'm really thankful that I wasn't in there when it went over, otherwise it would have been different."

A tow truck pulled Gorby's car out of the creek. Lincoln Avenue is now closed to through traffic until the bridge can be repaired, but residents who live near the bridge are allowed through to get home.

As for Devin Gorby, he heads back to Ionia High School next week and will share a very interesting experience with his classmates.
