Plaza Towers evacuated due to flooding

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Plaza Towers was evacuated earlier this morning.

Emergency crews responded to black smoke outside of the building prompting the order to evacuate hundreds of residents and guests.

Authorities believe a failing generator was to blame for the smoke.

Gas and power have been shut off to the building.

Residents will not be allowed in until the several feet of water can be pumped out of the lowest levels.

Plaza Towers issued the following statement: "Plaza Towers has been evacuated due to flooding of the Grand River.  If you need to collect your belongings, please go to the 2nd floor skywalk entrance for assistance.  For questions and information please call 616-242-6602."
