MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Muskegon County man is charged with making false claims against a sheriff's deputy.

Thomas Winters, 42, wanted the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department to pay his medical bills after he reported a deputy choked him. But dash-camera video shows the officer only grabbed Winter's jacket and that was to separate him from another man he was about to fight.

New high-definition cameras recently placed in sheriff's department cruisers captured the brief encounter.

"The video shows the officer was doing his job. It was a volatile situation and was nowhere near assaulting to this gentleman," Sheriff Dean Roesler told WZZM 13.

The charge of filing a false police report carries possible fines and up to 93 days in jail.
