HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - The Michigan DNR is releasing 16,000 juvenille salmon into Lake Macatawa Tuesday as part of a collaborative effort to promote Michigan fisheries and help maintain ecological balance in state's lakes.
The fish will be delivered to a floating net pen at Eldean Shipyard. They will stay in the pen for two to four weeks, imprinting on the local waters until they smolt.
The fish will then be released into the lake to work their way into Lake Michigan to spend the next four years. The hope is the fish will return to Lake Macatawa after that time to spawn.
