HOLLAND (WZZM) - Fire crews from several departments responded to a call at Michigan Wood Pellet Fuel around 4:30 Monday morning.
Chris Tinney, a captain with the Holland Department of Public Safety, says the initial witness reported seeing heavy smoke and another witness reported heavy flames coming from the building on Industrial Avenue.
Tinney says they immediately called in for aid from two area departments, Park Township and Holland Township, in preparation for what they believed would be a very large fire.
The 46,000 square foot facility contains a large amount of wood on the premises. However, when crews arrived Tinney says the fire was already contained and they only found light smoke inside the building.
"We believe it was due to a fire in some electrical conductors," said Tinney. "The fire was contained to a very small area. Damage is very limited. A lot of times when the insulation burns away or the fuel load around that hot area of the wire, when that fuel is consumed the fire will go out."
Crews remained on the site for several hours to verify the fire had not spread into the dust collection system. Damage to the company is estimated at under $10,000.
"We have had fires here before. Quite a significant fire in the dust collection system about a year or two ago," said Tinney "We want to make sure we have confined that fire and make sure we have done a good job making sure it hasn't extended into some very valuable equipment."
