Grand Rapids is Beer City USA. Now it's also home to the brewery creating a Pure Michigan beer.
(WZZM) - Grand Rapids did it again!
We clicked our way to the top in a big way and have retained the city's title as Beer City USA for another year, easily out-tweeting and Facebooking other cities up for nomination.
According to Examiner.com, which ran the poll and has created the whole event, Grand Rapids tallied 27,005 votes. In second place, Kalamazoo, with 11,150. Asheville, NC, which tied with Grand Rapids last year, came in third at 10,075.
Ann Arbor came in 4th at 847 votes.
Michigan tallied over 29,000 voters. North Carolina was second with just over 4,000.
This week is Craft Beer Week across the country.
Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell released a statement saying, "I've already spoken to Mayor Heartwell, and I will be going up to Grand Rapids to buy him a beer in celebration of the win. We are discussing how we can continue the larger story about West Michigan as an amazing craft beer region."
We could not have asked for a better outcome. Regardless of the order, having both West Michigan cities at the top of the Beer City USA poll is telling of our great beer culture and the amazing boom of craft beer.
We are looking forward to our Celebration in Kalamazoo tonight at the Beer exchange as the Kickoff to American Craft Beer week and to Bell's Tap takeover at the central City Tap House.
