GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- No apartments were seriously damaged, but heavy rain that fell in Grand Rapids Monday afternoon flooded the lobby of an apartment building on the city's southeast side.

It happened around 3 p.m. Monday at the Waters House Apartments, 500 Fulton Street E.

Managers at Waters House would not speak on camera, but told WZZM 13's Phil Dawson the rain came down so hard that city storm sewers on Fulton were overwhelmed.  The overflow polled in the parking lot, soaking several cars and flooding the first floor of the building.

"I was looking out the window and I saw all this water coming over the iron railing," said Anthony Guyton, who lives in Waters House.  "I saw it getting higher and higher."

Residents say it took ten minutes or less for the water to fill the parking lot and come into the building's first floor.

"When I came down from my apartment, I saw it inside the lobby," says Guyton.  "I was thinking, 'Is this a movie or what?'"

"I immediately ran upstairs, got my keys and jumped in the car," says Heather Roscoe, another Waters House resident.

Residents say they banded together to move cars out of the way of the flooding.  They are also happy to see the first floor apartments be spared from damage.

"The apartment is fine completely, but the lobby area is flooded," says Roscoe.

Waters House managers say they had a similar flood ten years ago.  They made improvements to their property to protect the building, but they believe the city storm sewers need an upgrade.
