WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM) -- City leaders are expecting tax revenues to fall over the next few years, so they are taking steps now to spend less money and cut certain taxes.

Council members this week approved a merger of their police and fire administrations into a new public safety department. Leaders expect the change to make city government more efficient.

The city council also approved a plan to reduce Wyoming's public safety millage by .25 mills -- a savings of $500,000 to taxpayers. However, the city is increasing water and sewer rates by two percent.

The budget, which was passed unanimously Monday, also gives the city manager a 2.1 percent pay raise, but does not guarantee any future pay increases. It also puts the city manager on a pay-for-performance evaluation system.

The new budget takes effect July 1.
