GRAND RAPIDS (WZZ) - It's the end of an era for the Creston High Polar Bears.  The final graduating class gathered at the high school for a final class picture Saturday afternoon, then headed to the Sunshine Community Church on the East Beltline.

The 109 graduates are the last to walk in the Creston's yellow cap and gowns.

The school opened in 1923 and is one of 10 Grand Rapids Public School buildings closing this year as part of a massive restructuring plan.

But it wasn't an emotional day for just the graduates.

Many Polar Bear alumni were in the audience, including GRPS superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal.

"Once a Polar Bear, you're always a Polar Bear, I'm a 1977, I'm a 1977 graduate of Creston High School so this is really bittersweet for me," she said to thunderous applause.

Famous Creston alumni include Fred Meijer's son Hank and Roger Wilkins, who worked with the Washington Post during the Watergate scandal of the 1970s.

One reason Creston is closing is its declining enrollment. The school currently has half the student body the school is capable of holding.

Current underclassmen at Creston will transfer to Central High school next year. City High Middle School will now move into the Creston building.
