SYRACUSE, NY (WZZM) - Despite being outshot 28-21, The Grand Rapids Griffins managed to draw first blood in the Calder Cup Finals series against the Syracuse Crunch.

Griffins won game one Saturday night in Syracuse, 3-1.

Grand Rapids got a first period goal from Mitch Callahan, which stood up into the 3rd period when Riley Sheehan lit the lamp to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

Less than 2 minutes later, the Crunch countered. J.P. Cote uncorked a 75-foot wrister that Petr Mrazek never saw.

The Griffins once again found themselves nursing a one goal lead at 2-1.

With under a minute to play, Syracuse pulled its goaltender to add an extra skater, but the Griffins managed to get control of the puck and Gustav Nyquist tallied an empty-net goal, sealing the win for the Griffins.

Grand Rapids now has a 1-game-to-none lead in the series.

Game two is Sunday night in Syracuse beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET.
