GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Teenagers and young adults in Kent County are participating in a free event to help them land jobs and internships.
The "Ready Now!" program, hosted by Grand Rapids Community College, runs through Thursday. More than 100 people are expected to attend.
GRCC's Upward Bound Program and School of Workforce Development are working with Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids, and the Kent County Intermediate School District, among other organizations.
It will teach resume building, with tips for applying and interviewing for jobs in today's world. What participants learn will be put to the test at the end of the three day event, when they interview for actual jobs and internships.
Raynard Ross, director of Upward Bound, hopes even more will register.
"The vision behind that was really to help these young people, who are now transitioning into the adult world, to begin to grasp the depth of the things they need to venture in if they are going to accomplish their goals whatever they may be," says Ross.
Ready Now! also aims to give participants (mostly ages 17-21), a realistic comparison of what jobs they qualify for with a high school diploma, versus higher education.
The event begins at the Kent County Intermediate School District campus, where participants will be trained Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, there will be the job and internship interviews at Goodwill Industries 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
To register, call Goodwill Industries at (616) 532-4200.
