(DETROIT FREE PRESS) - The Detroit Tigers have designated struggling closer Jose Valverde for assignment, according to Jon Heyman of cbssports.com.
The Tigers now have 10 days to trade Valverde. If they fail to do that, he likely will be released.
The Tigers also placed outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo on the disabled list with a strained muscle in his side. They called up outfielder Avisail Garcia and reliever Al Alburquerque from Triple-A Toledo.
Valverde, who wasn't re-signed by the Tigers in the off-season, got another chance with the team when he agreed to join them on a minor league contract. He earned his way back into the closer's role with his performance in the minors in April. He fell out of it as he allowed a slew of homers in recent weeks.
